About
How this is put together
A directory is only worth as much as its sourcing. Here is exactly what we cover, where the information comes from, and how to tell us we got something wrong.
Coverage area
Northern Dealbook covers Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, and South Dakota. A firm is listed if it actively deploys capital into companies headquartered in one of those four states — whether or not the firm itself is headquartered here. A national fund with a real presence in the region belongs in the directory; a local firm that only invests on the coasts does not.
A transaction enters the deal record if the company receiving capital is headquartered in the coverage area, or if a firm based in the coverage area led the investment.
Sourcing
Every firm profile and every deal entry carries at least one citation, displayed on the page rather than buried. Sources are typically regulatory filings, the firm's own published materials, press releases, and reporting by regional business publications.
Each source records the date we retrieved it — not the date the source was published. That distinction is what makes re-verification possible and what keeps a profile from quietly aging into fiction.
What we will not publish
We do not estimate. If a fund's assets under management are not disclosed somewhere we can point to, the field is left off the profile entirely rather than filled with a guess. The same goes for check sizes, headcount, and returns. An omitted field is honest; an invented one is not, and in a directory of identifiable operating businesses the difference matters legally as well as editorially.
Deal amounts that were not disclosed are markedUndisclosed, never zero, and are excluded from aggregate totals — with the count of excluded deals shown alongside the total so the figure can be read correctly.
Corrections
If your firm is listed and something is wrong — or you would rather not be listed at all — write to[email protected] and we will correct or remove the entry. Firms that review and confirm their own profile are marked Confirmed by firm in the directory.

Why a law firm publishes a directory
Because the information did not exist in one place, and because the work of finding it out is the same work you do before advising anyone on a deal in this region. Building the directory makes the practice better. Publishing it is how it earns its keep.
That arrangement creates an obvious tension, and you are entitled to see it stated plainly rather than buried: some of the firms and companies described here are, have been, or may become clients of Madgett Law, LLC.
Three rules keep that from bending the coverage. Listing in the directory is free and cannot be bought. Listing is not conditioned on any business relationship, current or prospective. And every factual claim about a firm or a deal carries a citation on the page, so you can check the source rather than trust the publisher.
If you think a piece of coverage reads as though it were bought, tell me. That correspondence gets the same treatment as a factual correction.
